On November 16, 2017, the International Workshop for Lancang-Mekong Freshwater Ecosystem Management was held in Beijing. Zhou Guomei, Acting Director General of Lancang-Mekong Environmental Cooperation Center, Zhong Yong, Secretary General of Lancang-Mekong Water Resource Cooperation Center, and representatives of the Department of Nature and Ecology Conservation of Ministry of Environmental Protection, attended the meeting and delivered remarks. Nearly 100 people from the Mekong countries’Environment Department and the embassies to China, as well as institutions under the Ministry of Environmental Protection, research institutes, local environmental protection departments, international organizations, enterprises and the media attended the meeting.
The International Workshop for Lancang-Mekong Freshwater Ecosystem Management is an important activity of Lancang-Mekong Environmental Cooperation. The workshop fully shared the Lancang-Mekong countries’ freshwater ecosystem management methods and international experiences and discussed the cooperation prospects of Lancang-Mekong freshwater ecosystem management.
During the workshop, representatives from Lancang-Mekong countries reached the following consensus: In the future, relying on the Lancang-Mekong Environmental Cooperation Strategy and the Green Lancang-Mekong Initiative as the flagship project, projects and activities related with water governance, ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation will be carried out; to strengthen cooperation in the field of biodiversity conservation, to jointly provide contributions to the forthcoming Fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2020; to strengthen policy dialogue in areas such as ecological environment management, biodiversity conservation and environmental monitoring cooperation and carry out joint research to promote the concrete implementation of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
On March 23, 2016, Premier Li Keqiang put forward at the First Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Leaders' Meeting the initiative that “China is willing to take joint efforts with Mekong countries to establish the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center and Environmental Cooperation Center, strengthen technical cooperation and the exchange of talents and information as well as enhance green, coordinated and sustainable development.” As a concrete measure for implementing the leaders' initiative, the Lancang-Mekong Environmental Cooperation Roundtable Dialogue was held in Beijing on November 15, 2017. The workshop on Lancang-Mekong freshwater ecosystem management is one of the series-conference activities of Lancang-Mekong Environmental Cooperation Roundtable Dialogue.
